L3Harris recently broke ground on a new on-site solar carport at its San Diego facility, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability and promoting environmentally friendly practices. L3Harris executives were joined by solar developer Baker Electric to mark the beginning of construction on this critical solar project, designed to supply renewable energy for approximately 95% of the site’s electricity demand.

“As we look towards the future, L3Harris’ solar carport stands as a testament to the transformative potential of renewable energy projects, and a powerful example for other businesses to follow,” said Jeff Hanke, Vice President, Operations and Program Excellence, Space and Airborne Systems, L3Harris. “It represents a significant investment in the company’s long-term sustainability goals and signals our dedication to creating a more sustainable and economically resilient future.”

Using solar energy reduces L3Harris’ environmental impact and also contributes to economic efficiency for the company. In addition to sourcing the majority of electricity used at the location, L3Harris anticipates the solar carports at its San Diego site to bring substantial annual savings.

The new carport will include ground-mounted solar panels that are installed above parking lots and oriented at the most optimal angle for sun exposure. The project will use existing parking areas at the San Diego site, which maximizes space without requiring additional land, and will provide shaded parking for employees.

While this initiative is a key infrastructure improvement for L3Harris’ San Diego site, it also serves as a leap toward achieving the company’s goals to increase renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

This particular site also completed a sustainability-focused project in 2022, aimed at reducing water use through Xeriscaping, a landscaping method that uses native plants and techniques to reduce irrigation needs, decreasing the site’s water usage. Xeriscaping is especially beneficial in parts of the country where water resources are limited.

L3Harris is committed to increasing its renewable energy portfolio and reducing GHG emissions across the enterprise. This initiative aligns with broader industry trends where businesses are increasingly investing in renewable energy to support global climate goals.

The solar carport project is scheduled to be operational at the end of 2025.
